Welcome Remarks by the Chair:Dr. Tajdolati chaired the meeting and declared the meeting open. Arif Ahmed moved a motion to approve the agenda. Jonathan Annobil seconded it. The motion was carried. . Minutes of the previous meeting:Jonathan Annobil moved a motion to approve the minutes of the previous monthly meeting Isa Melo seconded it. The motion was carried. President’s Report/Discussions:Presentation on Toronto Newcomer’s Day: May 29, 2018 will be the 4th annual Toronto Newcomer day at Nathan Philips Square. The event was created in 2014 and in May of 2015 Newcomer day was approved by the council. This event was created with a goal to commemorate and welcome newcomers to Canada while making vital community information accessible. Last year 60 community agencies attended and provided an information fair handing out resources and information to newcomers. An indoor and outdoor tour of city hall is lead throughout the day and there is an information fair beginning and 11:30am followed by a show until 3:30pm. The event includes speakers from all orders of government and a Citizenship ceremony where newcomers take their Oath of citizenship right in Nathan Philips Square at 2:00pm. Two newcomers are MC’s for the event and there are Indigenous performances on the main stage as well as part of the citizenship ceremony. A great deal of outreach is done across the GTA to ensure the maximum amounts of newcomers are included for this diverse event. Many activities will be taking place in and around the square including a newcomer market place and food fair showcasing art and cuisine from all over the world. Various activities for the kids will be held in the library and surrounding area. The event is to bring together, celebrate and welcome newcomers to Canada, therefore everyone in the community is welcome to attend and the event is free to the public. Presentation by Dr. Natasha – Registered HomeopathDr. Natasha is a registered Homeopath based in Thornhill at Yonge and Steeles. She introduced her topic of alternative medicine by noting the new legislation by Health Canada called Patient First in which Patients have a choice in how their health is monitored or treated and they are given the choice between conventional and homeopathic medicine practices. She presented information to studies in which the International Homeopathic Committee found the support of physicists despite the extreme criticism which homeopathy faces. She went on to explain that homeopathy is very popular in Europe and historically the royal family has used homeopathy since the 1800’s, Peter fisher - family physician for royal family. We had a few homeopathic hospitals in Ontario and Ottawa and then the medical industry expanded greatly and took over homeopathy. Homeopaths face harsh criticism due to the profession being discredited and alternative medicine is debated. Treating human vibrational patterns that become unbalanced, the same vibrational patterns that are evident in nature are said to create benefits which no conventional medicine can in the same way. Natasha came to shed light on the greatly debated profession and ask for help from journalists and publishers to consider supporting homeopathy in their work as homeopaths greatly need the support of independent publishers to become known to a greater audience. Many members asked questions and participated in discussion on various issues related to health and well being. Presentation by Joe Volpe – Corriere CanadeseJoe Volpe a long standing former Federal Minister and parliamentarian emphasized the need and importance of Ethnic Media in Canada and mentioned that collectively it is the strongest voice of Canadians, as a result he invested in reviving Corriere Canadese. He mentioned that there are more dedicated audience in the ethnic segment compared to mainstream media and the viewership, readership of mainstream media is declining and that of ethnic media is steadily increasing and as a result there is demand for ethnic programming in various languages. He has submitted an application for a broadcasting licence to CRTC and requested members of NEPMCC to support it only with the approval of the board and the office of the President. Corriere Canadese needs the support from the members of NEPMCC. CORRCAN needs to submit names, addresses (street and email), postal codes and phone numbers of those who agree to support their initiative for a broadcasting license. Motion : Thomas Saras suggested that NEPMCC support the application of Corriere Canadese to CRTC. Isa Melo moved the motion and Nabil Saad seconded it. The motion was unanimously carried Presentation by Yuri Natchetoi on the Digital Publishing Platform:Yuri Natchetoi provided an update on the progress of the Digital Publishing Platform. He informed how the project could benefit all members who are participating in the project. He said his committee is working out ways in generating advertising revenue for the print and digital media. New Members/ New Business:Rosemarie Sadlier informed the members August 1st Emancipation Day which marks the end of slavery in the British Empire and Ontario had earlier passed a legislation to celebrate it as an Emancipation Day. The RCS Commonwealth Showcase, will be held on 22 June 2018 at Toronto City Hall - Member's Lounge. The event is part of RCS 150th, the commemoration of the founding of the Royal Commonwealth Society, providing the perfect opportunity for awareness-raising, branding, building relationships, and exploring opportunities across the 53 countries of the Commonwealth. Adjournment: Isa Melo moved a motion to adjourn the meeting and Mareck Goldyn seconded it. The motion was carried. The Chair, Dr.Tajdolati adjourned the meeting at 9 pm. The next monthly meeting would take place on Monday, June 11, 2018 at the City Hall.
